Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, following Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" comment after England were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There is no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
