Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
